Is Photorealistic Drawing Art? | The Creativity Post
This is an interesting essay, certainly a question in relation to the bigger question of What is Art? that my fellow students struggle with doing studio work. I have felt inadequate when I couldn't make something "real" enough.

ReplyDeleteI'v worried about this issue a lot over the last few years, especially as try as i might, i find it hard to break free of representation drawing. But i keep some quotes handy form artists i admire:
"What is real is not the external form, but the essence of things . . . it is impossible for anyone to express anything essentially real by imitating its exterior surface." (Constantin Brancusi)
"The longer you look at an object, the more abstract it becomes, and, ironically, the more real." (Lucian Freud)
"The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity." (Alberto Giacometti)
"Exactitude is not truth." Henri Matisse
I especially love that last one from Matisse. Makes me realise i've hardly yet got to first base compared to him pretty well a century ago!
