Sketchbook Project

I'm finally posting my first journal I made  for the Sketchbook Project in Brooklyn NY. It is currently on tour with 1000 journals. The project was more daunting then I expected and my stamina was lower than expected after surgery. I had less time to complete it then I thought so was rushing to make the deadline. It is very raw as a consequence. I have since bought another journal and look forward to a more leisurely stroll in creating new pages.

What seemed simple turned out to be more difficult. First I couldn't decide what theme to focus on. I finally decided on a collection of quotes. This was highly influenced by the number of quotations showing up on my Facebook.

How difficult could it be to cut out letters from a magazine to create text. I discovered that the size and style I wanted wasn't easily found and took a lot more time than I thought. I switched to using a pen. I discovered the felt pen I had was thicker than what I wanted and I kept underestimating or overestimating how much space  needed to write all the text. So I stumbled along, envious of the journal artists who have there supplies and tools on hand to create easily what they wanted. Even with all the challenges I did enjoy the creating the pages. I felt very much like a child who was earnestly creating each page with colour and feeling.

Anyway I finally got around to putting the photos on my computer for upload. Here they are.

Moving On to Next Project

Well doing an art journal was quite an experience but it is on its way to Brooklyn NY. My disordered life left me scrambling to get it finished in time. As I was doing it I realized I didn't have the proper tools or other supplies so I had to improvise which made things a lot more raw and messy than I wanted. I took photos and will post them soon. They are still in my camera.

Our Collective is having a show opening February 3 and we were told the theme and title 3 days ago. YIKES. Crazy isn't it.
"total eclipse of the semiotics of love"

description of the show:

a visual exploration on one of the most significant and unique of human emotions: love. This show focuses on the abstract nature and cultural representation of love including its subjectivity, its commercialization, loss and its perpetuation as an ultimate value.
Anyway I woke up this morning and for some reason I thought of my new acrylic reds from Golden. Immediately images started to play through my mind and by the time I got up I had a  simple plan. I am excited to get started and need to go buy new paper. I hope what is in my mind actually shows up in the painting. If it's successful I think following up with a few more variations would be great series. Just in time for the month of love.

Hope all of you are looking toward a bright new year!

Art House Co-op Sketchbook project

I got my sketchbook yesterday. The blank pages are very intimidating. More so than an eight foot canvas. Stay tuned while I quash my fears.

Update: The book is gessoed and I have a theme. It is now quiet at home so I'll be starting the actual "work" before New Year's.

Sketchbook Venture

I'm venturing into new territory. I haven't been able to paint since my surgery. I still have 4 to 8 weeks more of recovery to be healed and gain my strength. So in the meantime I have signed up with Art House Co-op for their 2013 Sketchbook Project.

I'll keep you posted !

IN FLANDERS FIELDS POEM
The World’s Most Famous WAR MEMORIAL POEM
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium

2013 I'm on my way!

During the last week I had paintings accepted into a local show, major surgery and my 63rd birthday. All in all a fairly successful and eventful week.

work in progress, 4'x3', encaustic on panel
I'm chomping at the bit to get painting larger pieces and ideas for both 2D and 3D projects  keep popping up. I'm writing them all down because I know no matter how good the idea, it  probably will get lost unless I pin it down in writing. What stimulated all this thought is an offer of space for a solo show. I'm looking at a specific site that has challenges that need to be taken into consideration. The theme I'm thinking of is Reflection/Refraction which addresses properties of light, thought and identity.

My goal this year is to identify the annual local shows and make a timeline for working that considers the trigger dates for the shows. The themes change each year but depending on the organization there are elements that recur. I'm hoping that if a piece doesn't work for one show it can for another. I guess I'll find out if this strategy will work.

In addition to the work I plan to incorporate networking into the mix. It's going to be a busy productive year. I guess I really have graduated.

A big thanks to all my bloggy friends who teach and encourage me. I'd be a little lost without you all. :)

3 pieces for the Anonymous Art Show

Earth, Lift n Brine

I submitted 3 paintings to the Anonymous Show which I managed to finish and deliver before my surgery.

Each painting is acrylic which I'm still learning to use but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I'm looking forward to experimenting more with the various acrylic mediums.

Everyone is required to us an 8"x8" canvas unframed. No signatures on front so as to remain anonymous.

Stay tuned for more to come.
